The Bronze Medal

People who find Wallace’s books lacking in heart often object to his thinkiness. But often a thought is an emotion and an emotion is a thought; thinking, like humor, may be an intellectual defense against emotion, but it is a wonderfully advanced defense. Have you ever watched someone building a fort for years and years, an amazing elaborate ludicrous fort that for all the protection it offers them may as well be the Watts Towers? It is a very touching thing, to watch all that laborious construction.
